Bistro Alex Houston: An Elegant, Casual Dining Experience
There are over 8,000 restaurants in Houston. Many of them are chains, hundreds are family owned, and some of them are hidden like the Bistro Alex, located inside the Hotel Sorella CityCentre. I had no idea there was a fine dining restaurant inside the hotel, until last Thursday evening when we had dinner there on the 4th of July.
They weren’t very crowded at 6:30 when we dined, but it was a holiday, and reservations are usually recommended. If you’re dining with young children as we did, I recommend an early dinner. While the restaurant doesn’t have a children’s menu, they are happy to accommodate you with a burger, macaroni and cheese or chicken tenders, just ask your server.
Bistro Alex has an extensive wine selection and nightly specials. The appetizers are mostly seafood dishes. We had the crab cake and shrimp and grits.
Prepared with roasted jalapeno andouille grits, texas goat cheese, and spicy shrimp veloute, they were flavorful.
For our entree’s we decided to order the black angus filet, with caramelized onions, mushrooms, truffle bone marrow butter, mashed potatoes, cooked in a red wine & port reduction, and the scallops and shrimp.
The scallops were very tender and sweet, but the dish only had one small shrimp. That’s probably why its called scallops and shrimp, versus shrimp and scallops.
Instead of ordering the kids something different, we divided up our entrees and ordered two sides to share. There was plenty of oven roasted veggies and herb butter grilled asparagus for all of us!
Our server Elayna, was really on top of making sure we had fresh bread and plenty of water for the kids. When my son dropped his cup of water on the floor, she had him a new one in under a minute. While the service was great and everyone was wonderful, we rushed through our meal because we felt like our antsy 2 year old might be distracting to other diners.
Bistro Alex has a very elegant, romantic ambiance and while there were other families, our kids were some of the youngest. Maybe the restaurant will consider trying to seat families either by the kitchen where the kids can watch all of the action, or by the windows.
Ready for a romantic dinner, you could also surprise your significant other with a room at Hotel Sorella, give them a call and make reservations. (ask about special promotions).
