Not too long ago the strong majority of families were nuclear; consisting of a mother, a father and a couple of kids running about inside a white picket fence. But as the world and our culture continues to evolve, we are seeing a changing dynamic at the family dinner table. We’re seeing single and blended families as well as other families who were considered “untraditional” less than 100 years ago. They come in all shapes and sizes and there is no longer “one size fits all” anymore. One thing I’ve noticed is that no matter how unconventionally it comes about, family is family. But I don’t think it gets any more unconventional than the family created in Disney’s new film, The Delivery Man.
In the film, Vince Vaughn plays an average joe who had the potential to achieve great things and instead ends up an affable underachiever. He claims to be looking for his purpose in life as he mosey’s along at a dead end job, in a relationship that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. All of that comes crashing down around him when he wakes up one day to finds out he’s fathered 533 children through anonymous donations to a fertility clinic twenty years ago. Not only that, but 142 of them have come together to request a meeting with their biological father. Now he must decide what he is going to do but to figure it out he takes some unconventional methods. You can check out the method to his madness here with this exclusive clip.
While the concept of the film is amusing, it’s also a really heartwarming look at what it means to be a family — no matter how unconventional. The definition of family has evolved and, as seen in the film, can come in all shapes and sizes.
