It took me a while to set my New Years Resolutions this year. I started by choosing a word of the year: productivity. I chose this word because it encompassed so many things in my life that needed to improved in order to be a more productive me. Much of this improvement is needed in the areas of diet, exercise and sleep. I’m currently caught in a vicious cycle that makes me feel sluggish, tired and unproductive all day long. Task take me far longer than necessary to complete because I simply can’t focus or lack the drive.

Last year, I attempted to lose weight before a trip to the Dominican Republic. While I was going to the gym I felt fantastic. I was sleeping better. The exercise was making my hungry all the time so I was eating right and I was drinking more water, leaving less room for caffeine. I was even losing weight! It felt great but all too easily I fell off the bandwagon.

Yesterday I renewed my gym membership and  I’m back on the wagon, this time with a plan.

Step 1:

Start wearing my Fitbit Flex on a regular basis again – even if I’m not working out. My Fitbit taps into my inner fitness guru. I love being able to see how far I’ve walked each day, the feeling of success as it alarms when I reach 10,000 steps, and the fun of competing with friends. Most importantly it reminded me that even if I couldn’t see the results yet, I was hitting my goals and that counts for something.

Step 2:

Make exercise part of my normal routine. It’s so easy to get caught up in my busy schedule, to find very valid and reasonable excuses to skip the gym. But the truth is that I have a great support system and if I want it badly enough I can easily make the gym a regular part of my week.

Step 3:

Work at making exercise more fun. I know, that sentence sounds funny doesn’t it but I believe it’s possible to do. I can lift weights all day long but I hate cardio. I’ve been working with a trainer to create fun routines that mix up the cardio with weight lifting. But if I want to lose any sort of weight cardio is inescapable. One of the best ways to break down the cardio wall is with music. In fact, studies have shown that music can increase the intensity and duration of a workout by as much as 15%. For me, it’s all about drowning out the sound of my footsteps and my own thoughts. With every slap of foot to treadmill my body mocks me, pounding out a rhythm that says “It’s too hard. It hurts too much. You can’t take one more step.”

Being able to drowned out that voice with music allows me to go further and faster than I could on my own. Unfortunately, it’s not easy to listen to music while I work out. Not all earphones are created equal some hurt, some can’t handle the movement of exercise and are constantly falling out.

In 2008 an Ironman Triathlete and a 24-time marathoner created yurbuds in response to that problem. These earbuds are ergonomically designed for comfort and exceptional fit.  The Inspire Limited Edition Wireless Sport Earphones lock in place so they never hurt and you don’t have to worry about them bouncing out (like I need another reason to pause the treadmill). These Stereo-Bluetooth headphones are both sweat and water resistant. Additionally they feature full track & call control with a wind-blocking microphone designed for call clarity. Lastly, they have a battery life of up to 6 hours – perfect for six, 1 hour workouts a week! Just charge up on rest day.

Step 4:

It’s more than getting fit. For me, it has to be about more than just weight loss. It’s about the way I’m less stressed, more rested and happier in life. Working out allows me to be a better wife, mom, student and person.

What fitness resolutions did you make this year?

  2. I definitely need to move more. Working at the computer keeps me sedentary…my husband jokes he’s going to attach my computer to a exercise bike and only make it run if I’m pedaling! LOL. Any time I am exercising music needs to be blaring!

  3. I’ve never even heard of wireless ear buds! My brother would love these! He’s actually got some Best Buy bucks saved up from Christmas, so I’m going to tell him about these and I’m sure he’ll want to jump on them. He only likes ear buds and I wonder if he’s ever heard of wireless ones. Thanks for sharing!

  4. I like your word and your meaning behind it. I too chose a word and mine is “mindful” – I shall do all things mindfully. Good luck with yours…..you can do it!!
