Disney Pixar Brave: Highland Games Take Aim in Houston at Discovery Green

What does one wear to the Highland Games? If you’re a lad you’re probably sporting a tartan kilt and if you’re a fair maiden it seems the popular look would be a tartan skirt with long matching argyle socks!

But if the Highland Games were to be held in Houston, TX in mid June what should a lad or maiden wear to be competitive and withstand the scorching Texas heat? My best guess would be nothing made from wool and leave the socks at home in your drawers. Besides while the Scots and Highland Games are big on tradition the emphasis is more on the athletic competition in the events with entertainment a bonus! Its a little difficult to be competitive when passed out from heat exhaustion, right?

The Highland Games are a Scottish tradition dating all the way back to 2000 BC. The first Highland Games in the Unites States was held in New York City in 1836. In 1866, the Caledonian Club of San Francisco held its first Games and is the oldest continuously running Games in the U.S. Today, there are numerous Games throughout Scotland as well as more than 200 annual games and festivals across the U.S. and Canada, and in New Zealand and Australia.

One day I hope to be fortunate enough to travel to Scotland and attend the Braemar Gathering, held in September. The Braemar Gathering, is attended by the Royal Family annually, and is the largest and most prestigious Highland Games event.

With no immediate plans for a trip to Scotland, I’m excited that Houston lads and maidens can take part in the festivities of Disney Pixar Brave’s Highland Games this Thursday at Discovery Green without the hassle of a long flight or passport requirements.

What can you expect? Well I doubt you’ll see many kilts but you will be able to test your skills at Caber Toss, Archery, Hammer Throw and Sheaf Toss while collecting stamps at each game to receive complimentary movie prizes! WAIT! They’re going to let both children and parents use bows and arrows and toss hammers? Um…maybe we should all wear armor and protective gear! Just kidding, I’m sure it will be safe!

Be sure and get there early because there’s a sweet bonus if you’re one of  the first 35 families, you’ll receive screening passes to see the Brave before it opens in theatres. Local stations KKHH-FM, KHMX-FM and KILT-FM will be on-site awarding prizes. Games will be held at Discovery Green, Grace Event Lawn, 1500 McKinney, Houston, TX 77010, across the George R. Brown Center, on Thursday, June 14, 2012 from 2:00 PM– 8:00PM!

So are you brave enough to come out and compete? You can see Brave in theaters on June 22. Learn more about Merida and the movie Brave on Facebook and join the conversation on Twitter @DisneyPixar.
