Well, it is no secret that Southern California has seen decidedly less snowfall this winter than the previous winter. Thanks to La Niña, the east coast is seeing record subzero temperatures and snowfall, while those of us on the “best coast” have enjoyed a relatively mild winter.

For those would be snow bunnies, this could be a real bummer were it not for one of SoCal’s best kept secrets. Located just an easy 90-minute drive from LA, Mountain High Resort in Wrightwood, CA is the wintery wonderland everyone can enjoy.

Mountain High has three resorts: West, East, and North. Right now, only the West Resort is open with several great runs open with well-groomed snow, and almost all lifts operating. The East and North Resorts are currently closed. Nonetheless, there is plenty of fun to be had on the mountain. The runs that are open are perfect for beginners and experts alike.

We had a fabulous time last year and were eager to visit again. Upon arriving at Mountain High, I was greeted warmly by the staff and directed towards the rental center. The rental process was extremely fast with the resort’s smooth flowing system. After checking in, I was out the door with my gear, and on the slopes within minutes.

Staff at the rental center were efficient and courteous, and happy to answer any questions. They even helped me put my boots on :)

Before hitting the slopes, I mustered up some liquid courage with a quick cocktail at the Foggy Goggle, a lively outdoor bar at the base of the mountain. Take it from me, do yourself a favor and order the Bloody Mary. It’s amazing!

After the libation, it was time to snowboard. Mountain High West has seven lifts and a superb mix of beginner, intermediate, and expert runs. I never waited longer than a minute for any lift. Mountain High is the perfect spot for families as its slopes offer something for everyone.

The expert runs are challenging, while the intermediate runs are very approachable, and the beginner runs are safe and easy with topnotch ski instructors available if needed. Perfect for the kiddos.

Midday, I stopped for lunch at the Bullwheel Bar and Grill, a ski in/ski out restaurant located right on the mountain. As my mittens dried off by the fireplace, I ordered chicken tenders with fries and their homemade fried raviolis. All of it was delicious.

With a full belly and warmed toes, it was back to the slopes for some more fun in the snow. In the evening, I returned to the Bullwheel for some après ski apps, music, and beverages courtesy of the wonderful staff at Mountain High. It was the perfect ending to the perfect day.

Mountain High Resort is Los Angeles’s closest ski resort. When all three resorts are running, Mountain High boasts more trails than Snow Summit, more acres than Bear Mountain, and more terrain than Snow Valley!

February tends to be the snowiest month, so there is a good chance that the North and East resort will open soon and many more runs will be available.

So, there you have it. The secret is out! Grab your gear and head to Mountain High for fun the whole family can enjoy.
