The Smurfs are back and this time they’re in 2-D! Following the success of The Smurfs 2, Sony Pictures is releasing an all-new animated special The Smurfs: The Legend of Smurfy Hollow on DVD September 10, 2013.
Inspired by the classic Washington Irving tale “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” the Smurfs learn the value of friendship and family in the animated film that fans of all ages can enjoy.
When Brainy Smurf is favored to win the annual Smurfberry Hunt for the ninth year in a row, Gutsy Smurf sets out to discover how Brainy wins every year. Gutsy’s investigation takes him into spooky Smurfy Hollow – and right into Gargamel’s trap! Can Brainy and Gutsy, with the help of Smurfette, put aside their rivalry before Gargamel captures them, or worse, will they come face-to-face with the legendary ghost, the Headless Horseman?
Perfect for the holiday season, the film has received critical and audience acclaim and was selected in official competition at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival. I was fortunate to see a first-look of the movie and agree with the critical and audience acclaim, as Smurfy Hollow is truly an enjoyable mini-movie to watch.
Fans will enjoy that the film combines cutting-edge CGI that was featured in the first two Smurf movies, as well as traditionally hand drawn animation. The voice talents of Hank Azaria (Gargamel), Alan Cumming (Gutsy), Fred Armisen (Brainy) and Anton Yelchin (Clumsy) all return to reprise their roles in the 22-minute film adding some Halloween fun.
The film will be released September 10th along with a fun and heartwarming holiday-themed The Smurfs: A Christmas Carol that will be available as a stand-alone DVD. Both films have a running time of 22 minutes and are rated G.
Thank you Sony for providing a screener copy of this film for review purposes. All opinions remain my own.
