Anytime someone asks John or me how we met, we look at each other and start laughing. Now, thanks to the super cool Windows Phone, I can just show them with the how we met phone app.
It’s a funny story, because it was more of an accident than intentional. I was in Houston, TX on business, and while auditing employees at a country western bar, his best friend, Scott, asked me to dance. I reluctantly agreed, because I didn’t know how to two-step, and afterwards was introduced to John.
Both guys were friends with employees at a local radio station, and I joined all of them for breakfast at IHOP. While at breakfast, the discussion covered suggestions for growing my market in Houston as well as the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo that was in town. The group invited me to attend the Clay Walker concert the following day, and Scott and John offered to be my unofficial guides/dates.
I was supposed to meet John & Scott at Pappasito’s for lunch, and we’d ride to Reliant Stadium together for the show. Scott was over an hour late, so John and I got to know each other while enjoying Tex Mex and margaritas. In my mind, it was nothing more than an afternoon with friends and “my first rodeo.” I never imagined it would be our first unofficial date!
Scott and John stayed in touch with me even after I’d returned to Wisconsin and a hectic work schedule. Anytime I was in Houston on business, I’d meet the guys for dinner and they would teach me how to two-step and polka. After several trips, John told me he would like to date me officially, even though I lived a thousand miles away.
We dated long distance for over a year, seeing each other anytime I was in Dallas, San Antonio or Houston. He flew out to WI and accompanied me to my company Christmas party. In January, when I learned the client I worked for wasn’t renewing their contract and I would be laid off, he convinced me to move to Texas.
When John popped the question, I thought he would do it during a concert at the Rodeo. Unfortunately, my ring wasn’t ready yet, so he asked me after dinner at Pappasito’s. In April of 2008, we were married in Round Top, Texas, and almost five years later we have two amazing children. To this day, he loves to joke that “he stole me from his best friend.”
