Traveling to a third world country can be an eye opening experience for someone whose life revolves around their tech. Wi-Fi is not the norm. It’s a luxury. Cell service can be unreliable at best. Outlets seem to be at a premium. Which makes an unlocked smartphone seem as crucial as an appendage.

With the tag line ‘Whatever you do, do it big’, the android based Huawei Ascend Mate 2 is 4G LTE Capable and boasts a 6.1″ HD screen, making it ideal as entertainment on those long transatlantic flights. From a more practical standpoint, it’s large screen also makes this phablet ideal for working and sharing on the go.

Getting work done on the the Mate2 is made even easier with a couple of key features. It offers genius one handed features that adjust screen orientation to allow you to work easily with just one hand, which is usually quite difficult to do on larger phones. The unique floating screen lets you multitask and do two things at once like Notes, Messages, Calculator and more.

The 13MP camera also shoots in 1080p video which makes it ideal for capturing and sharing media on the go, and also offers easy seamless panorama shots without the tell-tale ‘fisheye’ look. Speaking of panorama, Selfie addicts listen up – it also offers a unique setting called ‘Panoramic Groufie.’ This feature captures a 3 shot panoramic selfie with your front facing camera – which is practically unheard of! It makes it ideal for capturing your group of friends or yourself and the whole background within a selfie. Forget carrying a monopod to extend the view, it seems like this genius feature will do the trick!

Using it as my main device, I average more like 25-hours – which is still pretty incredible, especially on press trips where outlets are far and few between. Aside from the extra long 4050 mAh battery, they also snuck in a really cool feature here in that your phone is reverse charge capable. What does this mean exactly? Well, it means you can use your phone as a power source to charge your other gadgets! I’ve never seen this on a phone before and it has the potential to most popular, once again.

A few other notable key features include:

  • A 32GB MicroSD card slot for expanded storage
  • a SIM card slot
  • Shatter Resistance Gorilla Glass 3
  • Glove Touch Mode Option for chillier climates
  • 1280 x 720 enhanced HD Resolution

While there isn’t any one thing that places this phone above the rest (except maybe the reverse charging!), what it does have is a little bit of everything at a great price point of $300, unlocked. And it’s that last word that is key – no contracts . Use whatever GSM carrier you like, even those prepaid ones, by quickly switching out SIM cards, with no fee. If you’re traveling internationally, this can be especially handy when visiting countries that provide traveller’s SIM with free internet!

  1. I love the battery life on this. I’m just concerned because of my tiny hands. Is it overly cumbersome?
