Destination Southern California: The Ranch at Laguna Beach

Laguna Beach might be known for having some of the best beaches in California but there is so much more to this seaside city in Orange county. In addition to an extensive artist community and seaside escapes, there are also hidden gems like The Ranch at Laguna Beach. This coastal ranch resort is nestled in the majestic Aliso and Wood Canyons and promises to be more than just your typical beach destination. I’ll be visiting with my family in January for a final verdict but their wide variety of programs for kids and adults definitely looks promising!

Being the golfer that he is, Ben is really looking forward hitting the 9-hole Gary Roger Baird designed golf course. Although I own a set of golf clubs, I wouldn’t exactly call myself a golfer. In fact, I’m downright awful but there is still hope for Whistler and we would love to teach him how to play. Their “Family Tee” golf program with its shortened tees and laid-back atmosphere would make for an ideal family learning experience.

Or maybe I’ll kick the boys onto the green for some male bonding while I partake in poolside yoga, a meditation class or one of the many spa services offered. While golf, fitness, and a variety of water activities (including SUP paddleboarding, snorkeling, deep-sea fishing, dolphin safaris and tide pool exploration) offered at The Ranch might be pretty “Lagunaesque,” there are so many other activities to take advantage of too. Just a few of the items that piqued my interest are:
  • Couples Cooking Classes
  • Guided Hikes and Mountain Biking
  • Garden Tours with Planting and Harvesting Parties
  • Archery
  • Campfires

Kids even have their very own Junior Rangers kid’s program. Instead of a video game room (bleh!) their program ditches the technology and promises good old fashioned adventure, exploration and education. The Ranger activities feature guided programs and curriculumn focused on marine life, sustainability and appreciating all of nature’s wonder. The program sounds like the perfect fit for a kid who is constantly bringing me bugs, leaves and flowers found in the yard for us to research.

On top of activities for a variety of family situations, The Ranch even offers some experiences to get to know your fellow travelers with activities like Stargazing, nightly Campfires and “Deer Talk,” a storytelling event that happens each evening at sundown—the magic hour when it’s rumored that their neighbors, the deer, appear.

If you have heard of The Ranch before it’s probably because it’s been local icon for the last 50 years. However, they’re currently working on a re-envisioned and renovated coastal ranch resort set to open this January. Stay tuned for our on-site experience!

  1. The Junior Ranger’s program sounds awesome. My kids aren’t really old enough for most things like this yet, but I will definitely be keeping in mind the activities that offer education and adventures instead of video games!

  2. Wow! I definitely love the ditching of a video game room (or worse, coin arcade!) for more rustic and calming activities for the kids. The ranch looks gorgeous- can’t wait to see more :)
