Ahh the kitchen. It’s the hub of the home, the place where comfort food is created and days are shared. If you just love to eat, you’re the one stuck doing the dishes or you’re a culinary fiend in the making someone in the family probably has talked about their dream kitchen. Perhaps that dream is becoming a reality or you’re just here pinning your dreams to you dream board late at night there are few things to keep in mind when you’re designing your dream kitchen. They apply to any style whether retro, rustic, industrial, beachy cottage – or one of the many other inspirational kitchen designs.

Pay Attention to the Details

One of the things that makes a “dream” kitchen stand out are the small details that bring it all together. Don’t get so caught up in the layout and shiny appliances that you forget small details – the cohesiveness of lighting fixtures, hardware, counter tops, flooring and appliances. You want all things to work together in harmony.

Think Outside the Box

Kitchen appliances used to be a pretty standard affair. These days the options are nearly endless. Try a stacked dishwasher instead of the traditional or an LG Double Oven for twice the baking this Thanksgiving. The new LG Studio line is an uncompromising approach to design that makes a bold statement in a home and makes stylish addition to kitchen décor. Instead of keeping items like the toaster or microwave in a  sitting on the counter consider a “counter garage” above or below the counter top where they can be kept (and plugged in) out of site but still functional.

Find a Place For Everything

Get creative with storage solutions. Instead of a traditional pantry try an 8 inch wide pullout pantry – perfect for that space between the fridge and the wall that’s rarely used.  If you do go with a more traditional pantry consider unique pull-out shelves in the lower section of the pantry. It’s perfect for canned goods, spices and condiments.  Unique cabinet hardwood can double  as a place to hang dish towels.

Pay Attention to Lighting

Lighting is always important! Rows of windows, lighting under the counter tops, pendant lighting along cooking areas and chandeliers above the island make the kitchen a brighter place to cook. They say you eat with you eyes, a well lit kitchen can offer a feast for the senses.

Add an Island

Many people think space is the biggest factor when determining if you can afford a kitchen island. I say it’s creativity! Moveable islands can afford you extra prep space without sacrificing a lot of space. If you do have the luxury of space, a gorgeous granite top island with seating for breakfast can be a great way to round out your dream space. Not to mention they provide plenty of extra storage! Check around for custom designs or turn it into a DIY project by repurposing old buffets or butcher block tables – let your creativity take over.

  1. If we decide to stay in this house and renovate, we’ll likely get rid of our kitchen table and add in a custom island with bar stools. I need more counter/prep space!
