As you may recall, my toddler and I previously received the VTech InnoTab 2 for review purposes. We found it to be a great way to beat “summer brain drain”. It was her first tablet designed for kids and she loved it. So of course, when VTech contacted us to complete a VTech InnoTab 3s review, we jumped on board! I’m raising a techie and she (okay, we) always love to get our hands on the latest and greatest products.

VTech InnoTab 3s Review

But not everyone feels the same way. As with many items in the technology industry, when tablets designed specifically with kids in mind hit the scene, it exploded. Many of Maddilyn’s classmates and cousins have tablets, and a few of them even own the VTech InnoTab 2/2s. Just like their adult counterparts with cell phones, whenever we’re presented with an upgraded model, many kids feel they must. have. it. But parent’s are skeptical and for good reason. Why should we shell out money for an upgraded model?

I totally get it, but I feel in this case, the InnoTab 3S is worth upgrading to. For starters, it retained all of the awesome features of the InnoTab 2S and gave us a few more.

It Isn’t Just a Facelift

The VTech InnoTab 3S isn’t an upgrade for the sake of upgrade.  With features like the addition of a D-Pad, it completely changed physical gameplay. I found the D-Pad not only made gameplay easier for my toddler, but that it also helps develop hand-eye coordination. The previous InnoTab was styled vertically, and by switching it horizontally I found it to be more user friendly while keeping the feel of a “real” tablet.

Get Connected

My daughter frequently watches me working, messaging and emailing from my tablet. With the InnoTab 3S, she can be just like mom. VTech Kid Connect (over WiFi) lets kids and parents connect through text messaging and sticker sending between the 3S and my smart phone. While she is a bit young to actually compose comprehensible messages, what’s important is that she feels like she is communicating with me. Unlike it’s predecessors, the InnoTab 3S also features kid-safe web browsing. Kids are able to visit pre-selected and parent-approved websites.

It’s In The Details

You didn’t really think I would upgrade for just three features right? Don’t get me wrong, the first two are pretty fantastic upgrades. But they also did a lot of little tweaking that make a big difference. For starters, they ditched the cumbersome batteries and opted for a rechargeable battery pack. Perfect for those long car rides. The 3S now comes with 2o apps instead of 15 and they bumped up onboard memory to 4 GB. This, thankfully, means less picking and choosing which Apps get to be downloaded to the tablet or deleted. The photo and movie features now offer even more than before with the ability to create stop motion videos, over 55 camera effects and more.

Overall the VTech InnoTab 3S feels like a total upgrade while retaining all the things we loved about the InnoTab 2S. And if you don’t believe us, here is a second opinion from TimeToPlayMag.com.

  1. I would love to win this for my little girl, Gwen. She would love it, and I would love that it has parental controls. That is the most important feature to me. Some little one is going to be thrilled to win! Thank you for the chance! Good luck everyone!

  2. I like that VTech Kid Connect (over WiFi) lets kids and parents connect through text messaging and sticker sending between the 3S and smart phones.

  3. I personally would enjoy all of the features. Reason being, kids these days are very tech savvy. My 2, 4, and 5 year old all know how to navigate through my smart phone. I put some apps on my phone for them to play because they got bored with the Leapster GS each of them have. They also LOVE to send both me and their dad text messages that we really don’t understand, so the messages and sticker sending would be AWESOME. Never knew this did that and for that feature alone, I am going to look into getting one for each of my kids instead of just my oldest.

  4. I love the fact that it has wifi, like a real tablet, but the features that allow you to control content. Also the padding that is essential with electronics for kids.

  5. I really love that we could send text and picture messages between my sons tablet and my phone! That is so neat, I really think we would have a lot of fun with that :)

  6. I like that my daughter and I can “text” via wifi… She would love that since her older sister has a cell phone and is texting, she’d love to be included in that.

  7. I love the VTech Inno Tab. I bought both my grandson’s one last year for Christmas and they play on them for hours. Reading, learning and watching movies. My granddaughter is old enough this year for one and she told me that’s all she wants Santa to bring her.

  8. There are so many great features! As an adult I love the rechargeable battery (so much more convenient than trying to locate batteries) and I know the kids will love the WonderCam with all the effects (they never stop taking pictures!). I also like that it comes with an e-reader :) Thanks!

  9. i can say i not seen this but i love ot have it for the kid and then i will
blog on it and they have game kid can paly with out bothere mom and dad

  10. The child-safe web browsing is a big one. I want to give my children freedom, but still know they will not end up on a site they are not supposed to be on.

  11. I think the most valuable change is the rechargeable battery pack! We spend a TON replacing batteries for our kids’ toys!

  12. I love that the kids can connect with you through your smartphones! I also think the kids would really love taking/making pictures and sending them to us!

  13. I like how it provides a learning experience for kids while making them feel awesome with the wifi experience & camera but also the different features easy capabilities.

  14. I like that the InnoTab 3S features kid-safe web browsing so kids are able to visit pre-selected and parent-approved websites.

  15. The D-Pad is the feature like the most, then the rechargeable battery pack so my grand daughter can take the VTech InnoTab 3S with us in the car and not have to worry about a corded charger in the car.

  16. The feature I’d most appreciate (by virtue of it making my sons happy) is the 180 degree rotating camera and video recorder – my 8 year old loves to steal his big brother’s iPhone to make videos; it’d be great if he had his own tablet (with Movie Maker app) to use!

  17. My children have been wanting a tablet for sometime. And itis always hard to decide on which tablet to gwt ao they don’t end up with one. I love the idea of education and games. We have always based our decisions on what we buy the kids by how much education is involved. Im sold on the games anthat it has a camera! The kids would love it!

  18. My favorite feature of the Vtech InnoTab 3S is the integrated 2.0 megapixel, 180° rotating camera. My daughter would have a lot of fun with it.

  19. I definitely appreciate the parental controls. There is way too much inappropriate material out there for my kids to view.

  20. After reading this it is hard to pick just one feature but I will have to go with the rechargeable battery pack. Batteries get expensive and we do a lot of traveling to go watch my nephew play football, so having rechargeable batteries would be awesome :)

  21. I like that it has the ability to create stop motion videos and tons of camera effects. Should impress even the older kids! Thanks for the review.

  22. The VTech Innotab 3S feature that I most appreciate is the Movie Maker where kids can become their own director, using their photos to create amazing movies.
