It’s no secret that we at Surf and Sunshine have been bitten by the travel bug. Whether we’re exploring our home state or jetting off to places far and away, we’ve got a penchant for wandering. But all of that travel can be hard on our bodies and our face, hands and feet can be especially sensitive to the effects of travel.

We have been working on some easy tips to share that may seem small but actually make a huge difference in our beauty routines and keeping our skin fresh and healthy.

Easy Beauty Tips To Use When You Travel

B.Y.O.B.B. – Bring Your Own Beauty Bag

With today’s strict travel security guidelines, it’s more important than ever to know exactly what you can bring in your carry on. First, get a small 1 quart sized zip-lock bag. (I find that products fit best in the short, wide bags vs the narrow, tall ones.)

A few personal essentials to pack in this include a hydrating facial cleanser, a face/body moisturizer plus lip balm both with SPF, hand sanitizer, no waste shampoo bars and conditioner.

The maximum size per bottle/container based on FTA guidelines is 3.4 ounces (100ml). It is critical for your skin to have your favorite products on hand, especially while traveling, because a change in your routine could result in a vacation breakout.

Take your cleanser with you

If I could only take two beauty products with me it would be my favorite natural skincare products – a brightening turmeric soap bar and matte face moisturizer, especially since I have sensitive skin.

As I said, a sudden change in that routine or a new product could result in an unsightly breakout. I’ve had to desperately buy face cleansers and moisturizers while traveling before and it did not end well for me so now I make sure not forget both.

I also LOVE my Clarisonic Mia 2 electronic cleansing brush. I’ve been using it for the last few days as part of a seven day challenge and can’t believe what a difference it makes in my skin. Not only does it feel cleaner, it’s softer and smoother too, allowing my natural glow to shine.

Best part is you can use it with a liquid cleanser or a bar soap – doesn’t matter! Just rotate it a bit directly on the bar soap with some water then apply to the face. SO easy and I can keep doing my part to reduce plastic waste. (baby steps)

The Mia 2 cleanses 6 times better than using your hands alone and can also be used with body and pedi brush heads for a head-to-toe sonic cleanse.

It’s safe to use twice a day and only takes 60 seconds to do its job – which is awesome because really, who has time for more when there are new places to explore?

Should I wear makeup while traveling?

As much as we want to look our best while traveling (you never know when you’re going to run into Prince Charming, right?), it’s actually a good idea to skip the heavy makeup while traveling.

Gasp, I know! But to help our skin, we really should avoid wearing makeup while on an airplane. Foundations and powders actually aid in drying out our skin so the best thing you can do to your face while flying is to moisturize, repeatedly.

However, if you absolutely cannot go bare faced, try a bit of mascara and a swipe of tinted lip balm but I stand by my statement, there is something beautiful about a fresh clean face.

Speaking of moisturizer…

Apply, reapply and apply again. Don’t limit moisturizer to just your face. Make sure you have a great body buttercream for your neck, hands, arms and legs too. Apply often throughout your flight and make sure you moisturizer daily while at your destination too.

Stay hydrated

It can be all too easy to swap out water for wine or any of those fruity little numbers being served at the swim up bar, but it’s more important than ever to keep hydrated while traveling.

The combination of dry air on the plane, sun, salt water (if you’re so lucky) and the general effects of travel can wreak havoc on your body’s hydration. Which will, in turn, wreak havoc on your skin.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying to skip the alcohol entirely, but just remember to mix in a bottle of water two or three times a day.

I received a product in partnership with Clarisonic in order to provide this review. All opinions remain my own.
