Who is the Dalai Lama? Dalai Lamas are the head monks of the Gelugpa lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. The 14th and current Dalai Lama, was given full poiltical power at the age of 15. Can you imagine that? In the United States a 15 year old isn’t even old enough to drive without adult supervision, legally consume alcohol or enlist in the military, yet he was given complete political control.
He has held the title longer, and traveled more than any of his predecessors. After he was exiled during the Tibetan Uprising of 1959, established a government in India, and focused on caring for the 80,000 refugees that followed him out of Tibet. In 1989, he won the Nobel Peace Prize, and is well known for his lifelong advocacy for Tibetans living in and outside of Tibet.
To date, the Dalai Lama has received more than 84 awards, honorary doctorates and prizes in recognition of work towards peace and nonviolence.
