Looking for an Unplugged Family Escape?

Hanalei Colony Resort is set on the lush, tropical grounds of Kauai’s North Shore. The buildings features traditional low-rise plantation style building with incredible views of Hanalei Bay and Kauai’s lush mountains.

At check in I was excited to find out that I would be staying in an ocean front room. I had been fortunate to spend every night in Kauai being lulled to sleep with the sounds of waves crashing on the shore. I stayed in suite G3 and I mention the exact room because I highly recommend you request it for it’s amazing views of the ocean and the mountains on three sides of the room.

All of the suites themselves are the same size. They’re designed with an open, airy ambiance with a full kitchen, dining and living room area, a breakfast bar, two bedrooms (enclosed with sliding wooden louver doors), and one and a half or two bathrooms.

The room was immaculate, very clean and well stocked. The furniture and bed we’re comfortable but it was the views that got me. Three walls feature large patio windows and sliding glass doors to take in sweeping views of the ocean or mountain in the distance. I slept with the doors and windows open each night as the island breeze swept through the room.

Hanalei Colony is the perfect place to come and escape from everything. They pride themselves on providing a truly “unplugged” island getaway. Suites do not have televisions, stereos, or phones. However there is complimentary high-speed wireless internet – but I recommend not using it if you don’t have to.

The resort is ideal for families for a variety of reasons, being unplugged is just one of them. Hanalei Colony also offers an onsite Mediterranean Gourmet Restaurant, complimentary continental breakfast, and weekly Mai Tai parties. Other amenities include a swimming pool (stocked with kids toys!), barbecue and picnic areas, and even a guest laundromat which is great for cutting down on packing!  The resort offers all the necessary amenities to have the perfect family escape. In fact, each room has a guestbook detailed with accounts of guest amazing family vacations, romantic getaways and honeymoons.

Checking out of the Hanalei Colony Resort was a sad experience but I can’t wait to take my family back someday for a truly unplugged family vacation.

Thank you Kauai Visitors Bureau and Hanalei Colony Resorts for hosting my stay. All opinions are my own.

  2. You know it’s a good vacation when you don’t want to leave. It does sound nice. The extra touches, like stocking toys sound thoughtful and nice.

  7. Years ago my husband and I got to spend 7 nights at Caneel Bay on the island of St. John’s … there were no phones, no wi-fi, no technology of any kind (there was a pay phone that guests could use in case of an emergency – this was before smartphones and no signals for cell phones)… I thought my husband was going to go crazy, but by day 4, it was heavenly! It’s nice to unplug from time to time.
