Sunshine, Margaritas, and a Gigantic Pie at the Key Lime Festival

Do you like the beach? Do you enjoy margaritas? How ‘bout key lime pie? What about a key lime pie reaching 9 feet in diameter? If these components seem like the ingredients for an incredible vacation than head to Key West, FL this July to help celebrate the Key Lime Festival!

2013KeyLimeFest02This year marks the second annual Key Lime Festival in honor of Florida’s official pie. The event was founded by David Sloan, author of “The Ultimate Key Lime Pie Cookbook,” and he plans to break last year’s record pie size of a puny 8ft in diameter.

2013KeyLimeFest01Starting July 3rd, the festival will commence with a Key Lime Bar Krawl where patrons can sample Key Lime martinis and margaritas as they move from bar to bar on the sunny, sandy streets of Key West. Then, on Saturday July 4th, head over to Green street to see the colossally delicious key lime pie. Last year’s pie used the juice of more than 5,760 key limes, 112 pounds of butter, 200 pounds of graham crackers, 41 pounds of brown sugar, 55 gallons of sweetened condensed milk, and 8 pounds of honey.  However, they plan on breaking that record and creating a pie measuring 9ft in diameter! A street party will kick off the reveal of the gigantic pie roughly the size of a kiddie pool.

2013KeyLimeFest03If you haven’t had enough pie after that attend the Key Lime Pie Eating Contest and Pie Making Challenge (for both amateur and professional chefs) on July 5th. If you prefer to hang back and watch, you can purchase tickets to sample the pies and help vote for the best pie.

On Saturday night, the festival closes with the Miss Key Lime U.S.A. Pageant. Saucy ladies will compete in categories including talent, costumes, vintage style, and Q and A segments. Enjoy a night of entertainment with the ladies of Key West competing to be crowned and revel in the “limelight”.

The Key Lime Festival is the perfect reason to head to Florida this July. Key West has its own fun loving culture and the festival is proof of its unique attractions. Soak up some sun, enjoy some margaritas, and eat a whole lot of pie.
