I don’t think living a few blocks from the ocean (and the beach) is something that will ever go unappreciated by our family. From impromptu bike rides down for a few hours of play or giving our son his first surf lessons, we love our days spent at the beach. We love the beach so much that sand, surf and sunshine are usually requirements for any family vacation plans.

Before my toddler came along, I wasn’t always worried about things like sunscreen. I tan easily and can usually be found snoozing in the sun with the rest of the lizards so shade and protective eyewear was just an “accessory”. Now that I’m responsible for the healthy skin of a toddler, I’ve become somewhat of a sunscreen hoarder, with every level in every form available within arm’s reach. We also follow this handy rule by the American Cancer Society…

hat and sunglasses

Slip! Slop! Slap! and Wrap! Rule

Slip on a Shirt:

Embrace the farmer tan and cover up with protective clothing as much as possible. Tip: The best clothing are those that can not be seen through when held up to a light.

Slop on the Sunscreen:

Apply at least 30 mins before heading out and Reapply every 2 hours and after swimming, toweling dry, sweating, or repeated falls on the Surfrider Wave machine. If you have difficulty reaching your backside, take this opportunity to get a free mini massage from your mate. Tip: Always use sunscreen with AT LEAST SPF 30.

Did you know an adult needs about 1 ounce of sunscreen to cover their arms, legs, neck, and face?

Slap on a hat:

Pretend like you have money and you’re headed to the Kentucky Derby. Cover your head with a wide-brimmed hat, shading your face, ears, and neck. If you choose a baseball cap, avoid lobster ears and neck with a quick spray.

Wrap on the sunglasses:

Wear sunglasses with 100% UVA and UVB absorption to provide optimal protection for the eyes and the surrounding skin. Extra large Jackie O style shades go great with the above mentioned hat! Tip: Don’t forget the kids!

With all of our needs different, I’ve been a long time fan of Banana Boat for my family because they have a large line of products. I received a variety of their newest product samples through a campaign with Mom Central and they’ve proven once again why Banana Boat is my go-to choice. They get that a family doesn’t necessarily all use the same sunscreen!

For the days when the boys play beach volleyball, Ben really likes the Sport Performance Coolzone spray. It goes on quick and easy and is refreshingly cool (I totally thought of this a few years ago….darn it!) I prefer using a lotion and love the smell and texture of the Protect and Hydrate. The Kids Tear-Free Sting-Free Lotion UltraMist is perfect for aiming at Whistler as he runs by, eliminating the need to tackle him in order to deliver sun protection.
