Whistler has always been an incredibly difficult eater. But it wasn’t until I found myself sitting at the breakfast bar for two hours that I finally reached the end of my rope. Something has to give. This kid just has no interest food. But as all mothers know growing boys need substantial nutrition. The meal that gives me most concern is breakfast. We simply don’t have time to sit for two hours fighting to get breakfast down in the morning and it’s so important that he gets a good meal in before a long day of learning.
We have tried counting bites, playing games and nothing works. When offered the opportunity to try Jimmy Dean Bacon, Egg, and Cheese Biscuit Sandwiches (I found them at Walmart) I was even more determined to devise a way to get Whistler to eat, that didn’t involve hiring a clown.
After some quick research and a little brain power, I discovered there a few things that may help the situation. We have said it here before, but kids are always more interested in eating things they help create. Thing is, I normally don’t have time to make breakfast from scratch each morning, nor the extra time it needs to have a toddler “help”. But this is where Jimmy Dean Sandwiches step in. They are quick and so easy to make. Just pop them in the microwave (or oven) and presto! Whistler can help me dish them up, run the microwave and serve.
Secondly, we all know how much kids learn through mimickery. You know the saying “monkey see, monkey do?” Well this monkey doesn’t – eat breakfast that is. It’s a typical pot/kettle situation. So by cutting the sandwiches in half Whistler gets a perfect portion and mom gets some nourishment to. Plus, we get a few minutes in the morning to just sit and be together while we eat.
But three year olds aren’t fooled that easily. As the name suggest Jimmy Dean Bacon, Egg, and Cheese Biscuit Sandwiches consist of Sausage, Egg and Cheese. So I’ve thought of a fun game. Knowing that Whistler is a smart kid who loves puzzles and learning new things I’ll ask him to close his eyes. Then I’ll feed him bites of just the sausage, the egg, the cheese or the whole thing and have him tell me what he is eating. Not only will this make him more conscious of all the yummy flavors but it will keep him anticipating the next bite.
This morning was a miracle. I honestly can’t remember the last time I didn’t have to nag Whistler to “eat your breakfast” 7,892 times. Not only did he finish his half, but he asked if I was going to finish mine!

He is a doll, and totally loving that!! I make lunches fun with bento boxes, that helps them to eat for sure!
I love these breakfast biscuits! My kids really love them too. Very easy in the mornings especially when you’re running late!
Awww! It’s great that he enjoyed his breakfast so much that he wanted to finish yours :) Those do look so delicious!
Good thing he enjoyed the sandwich… The pictures you took of him from start to finger linking joyful are … priceless.
Smart thinking on making it a puzzle to detect the flavors! I make breakast for everyone but don’t eat it (Gah, I shouldn’t admit these things, I know). I do, however, sit w.the kids while they are eating there, and it does make for really nice morning time together.
