Is anyone else sick to death of diets, dieting and “miracle solutions”? I’m tired of diets that require me to cut out complete food groups, or try to live off an insanely low amount of calories each day. I’m tired of giving up foods I love. A real “diet” shouldn’t involve those things. Life is all about balance and I feel like our food shouldn’t be any different. Which is why I was so intrigued by an offer from SheSpeaks to review Pomroy’s new book The Fast Metabolism Diet

Haylie Pomroy has been a celebrity nutritionist and welness consultant for over 17 years. She is a registered wellness consultant and a certified holistic counselor. This woman is so popular that I actually couldn’t believe I hadn’t heard of her before. She has been in featured in People, Us Weekly, Marie Claire and is featured on Access Hollywood often. Her celebrity client list is a mile long with people like Jennifer Lopez, Reese Witherspoon, Cher, Raquel Welch and Robert Downey Jr. Haylie is also the VP of Clinical Research and Development for East West Essential and has clinic locations in Beverly Hills, Burbank, Irvine, and Fort Collins.

Her list of accomplishments and references is a just as long as her client list but what had me delving into the book was the concept.

There are no counting calories, no banning entire food groups, and no quitting cold turkey on foods I loved.

It’s a simple 3-Phase Plan and the idea is to eat MORE, not less – amazing right? This meant 3 meals and at least 2 snacks each day.

The idea was to rotate what I’m eating throughout each week in order to boost my metabolism. Here is a basic breakdown what the book entails.

Phase I (Monday-Tuesday): Lots of carbs and fruits
Phase II (Wednesday-Thursday): Lots of proteins and veggies
Phase III (Friday-Sunday): All of the above, plus healthy fats and oils

But really there is so much more to it.

Phase 1: Unwind stress, calm the adrenals. (Duration: 2 Days)

Phase one is means to reboot your metabolism by giving it whole grains and natural sugars. The sweet fruits and wholesome carbs in Phase 1 stimulate endorphins in the brain and flood the body with very easily digestible nutrients. Yet while I was focusing on eating fruits and carbs I DIDN’T have to cut out meats or veggies.  Phase 1 allows my body to stop storing the food I eat and just digest it, and use those nutrients for fuel.

Phase 2: Unlock fat stores. (Duration: 2 Days)

Phase 2 is what I call the “meaty” phase – my favorite. I ate a lot of fish and steak – umm, yum! But also eat a lot of veggies like asparagus, mushrooms and peppers. This allows the body to convert proteins from the meat into amino acids, the building blocks of muscle. The protein combined with lots of vegetables are the keys to releasing “old” fat – you’re actually unlocking stored fat into the bloodstream.

Phase 3: Unleash the burn. (Duration: 3 Days)

In phase three, I was encouraged to eat everything from the first two, but also add healthy fats to every meal. IE Coconut, avocado, olive oil. The idea is to eat foods that would keep metabolizing the fat and keeping the newly released fat from being reabsorbed.

It was really nice that the book offered over 50 meals including (vegetarian, gluten free, and organic options too), so I was never an out of inspiration or ideas. The recipes weren’t your idea of “diet meals” either. I found recipes like Slow-Cooker Chili and Pepperoncini Pork Roast. Plus, by switching up what I was eating every few days I never got bored. The idea is that by keeping my metabolism guessing in this specific and deliberate way, I get it working harder and faster.

While I have to admit that the last 30 days was NOT ideal for me to try a new diet because I was traveling 24 of those days, I do have to say that it’s fairly easy to stick to and no one knew that I was even on a “diet”. I mean, you now how you can always just TELL when your girlfriend is on one? She eats super small portions or only orders a salad? Well that wasn’t the case for me! At least, on the days I was able to choose my meals. Unfortunately, these press trips have me running ragged and I end up not being able to eat when I need to or what I need to so I wasn’t able to see the results I expected. But I would like to point out that while I normally gain 5-10 pounds during these types of crazy whirlwind months, I actually didn’t gain any weight at all in the last 30 days! I’m *really* happy about that as I was dreading coming to my scale.

I received this book at no cost to me from Fast Metabolism Diet through She Speaks. All opinions are my own.
