More and more medications promise to alleviate migraine pain. Unfortunately, prescription pills can come with their own list of side effects. If you are looking for alternative ways to get relief from your migraines, consider these five tried and true options.

Blurry vision. Flashing Lights. Ringing in Ears. Nausea. A throbbing sensation so unbearable, you can barely take it. These are just some of the common migraine symptoms that millions of people worldwide suffer from every day.

No, migraines are not just an annoying illness; they can be extremely debilitating for many, interrupting one’s work, studies, and even personal relationships.

5 Alternative Ways to Get Migraine Relief

Ginger

Though ginger is a plant widely associated with being used as a spice or food ingredient, did you know you can also consume it for migraine relief? That’s right — ginger can help reduce the severity of migraines and is especially helpful with individuals who suffer from nausea as a result of them. The plant’s anti-inflammatory make-up specifically works to reduce inflammation in the nervous tissue of the body.

You can either drink ginger tea or purchase ginger oil to rub gently on your temples at the onset of a migraine as an easy remedy for the pain.

Lavender

Another natural alternative to medication for treating migraines is lavender oil. Lavender has been used for centuries to lessen stress or anxiety through aromatherapy with patients around the world. The oil is also commonly used to treat insomnia and even depression.

Like with ginger oil, you can rub lavender oil on your temples, back, and neck on the onset of a migraine to feel a soothing sensation of relief. Alternatively, simply breathing in the scent can work to smooth any pain quickly you may be experiencing due to migraines.

You can also put a few drops of lavender oil on a cloth and inhale slowly for quick relief.

Vitamins

If essential oils or teas are not your thing, consider taking vitamins to control your migraine pain.

MigreLief  is a dietary supplement that has been recommended by neurologists for over 20 years as a natural alternative to prescription medications. One if it’s ingredients is Vitamin B-2, otherwise known as riboflavin, which helps turn food into fuel, moderating energy levels.

My neurologist  recommended it to me on my first visit and it wasn’t until I had an unrelenting 7 week long migraine that I finally tried MigreLief Original Triple Therapy with Puracol. IT WORKED. You can read about my experience here.

Massage

Many migraines are caused by muscle tension throughout the body that may have derived from stress or strenuous exercise. Getting a massage helps by soothing out tense muscles and increasing blood flow in areas where the muscles are located. If you do not have pain anywhere else in your body than in your head, getting a scalp massage will focus specifically on the pain area.

The Basics

Lastly, health basics should never be forgotten. Did you know that the most common reasons for migraines include inadequate sleep, dehydration, poor diet, and lack of exercise?

Ensure that you are sleeping between 6 and 8 hours a night, drinking 2 liters of water a day, eating a balanced diet, and exercising for 30 minutes a day. Taking preventative measures against migraines is the best way to ensure you do not have them in the future.

Yes, migraines can be debilitating, but they do not mean that you cannot live a normal, happy life if you suffer from them. Discovering your triggers and most effective relief measures is the best way to getting back on track.
