I think for most people, their twenties was a time of confusion, exploration, and a lot of mistakes. In the HBO series Girls, creator, producer, and star Lena Dunham manages to capture the essence of the struggles twenty somethings experience after college. Playing lovable but quirky Hannah, Lena has created a show that highlights the painful realities new generations face as they try to find themselves in a world that changes constantly, a world influenced by hashtags and new trends. In between tackling career obstacles, the show is peppered with the ridiculous juvenile behavior we all remember from our twenties as well as the all consuming confusion of young love.

The honest portrayal of young adulthood is as refreshing as it is addictive. Lena manages to write a series that softens the rocky paths many of us have traveled in our early twenties and gives us the room to laugh and forgive ourselves. She is a writer with incredible talent and honest insights. Here are six of my favorite quotes from Lena that exemplify her unique perspective and the fun loving tone that accompanies Girls.

“It’s interesting how we often can’t see the ways in which we are being strong-like, you can’t be aware of what you’re doing that’s tough and brave at the time that you’re doing it because if you knew that it was brave, then you’d be scared.”

“I always thought the saddest feeling in life is when you’re dancing in a really joyful way and then you hit your head on something.”

“There’s people who don’t want to see bodies like mine or bodies like their own bodies.”

“Every time I start feeling sexy I trip.”

“It’s interesting to see how other people react to an oversharer.”

When I graduated college I had a series of just humiliating jobs that I couldn’t believe I was at.

Get more of Lena on her series Girls. Season 4 starts January 11th at 9 pm on HBO. You can also binge watch Girls now on Verizon FiOS.

  1. Funny quotes. I have yet to watch the show and not certain I will, some of the things she revealed in her book turned me off on her.
