Nestled deep within a national forest, miles from the nearest town, resides our little slice of a heaven. Hidden amongst the lush conifers and sweeping birch trees, a storybook-esque A-frame cottage overlooks a quiet lake in the heart of Michigan’s upper peninsula. The sun peeks through the tree canopy creating dancing dapples of light on the grass below. It reflects off the water in almost blinding brilliance as the waves slap along the docks and shore, creating a never ending summer song.

The silence and tranquility of this space is only evident in the early dawn hours and late into the night. The moments in between are filled with the sound of children laughing and talking. Their happy giggles permeate the air until overcome by the roar of boat motors, or sound of jet ski’s shooting rooster tails of water in their wake. During the daylight hours, the quiet cottage is transformed into an outdoor playground where we fish and boat, ride the trails and partake in a little sibling rivalry on the jet skis. It’s a place where siblings bond and cousins become each other’s first best friend.

Our family makes the annual trip to “the cottage,” as it’s become known, every 4th of July weekend. This year I gladly flew 1200 miles and will drive an additional 300 miles to partake in this time with my family. My siblings will also be traveling from near and far to enjoy the weekend with me. In fact, Michigan’s roads will be filled with cars traveling “Up North” for the Fourth of July weekend, and all July through for that matter. Did you know July is the peak season for travel? Not surprisingly it’s also the peak season for hotel and car rental bookings too.
