These little Oreo owl cupcakes turned out so darling! They would be a really fun and easy addition to any Halloween party.

Oreo Owl Cupcakes

Owls are a pretty big deal in this house. My daughter’s bedroom is done in a whimsical theme but these wise little creatures compromise a good deal of her bedding and artwork too. So naturally I fell in love with these adorable Owl Cupcakes with Oreos.

To make a long story short, I’m lazy. Really, I am. Last night at about 10:00PM I began planning my daughter’s birthday party, which was scheduled to begin a mere 12 hours later. I’ve seen people’s pinterest boards, I know that normally a doting parent should begin party preparations 3-4 months in advance. But who has the time for that? (It took all of my self restraint to not say “whooooooo” just now).

When I saw these cute cupcakes I knew I had found the perfect recipe. Mostly because they are simple enough for a 6-year-old to make, which means that decorating owl cupcakes could be a party activity, saving me both time and the stress of planning another game. Win-win!

They would so be cute in a bento lunch but they’re also easy enough that you can make them in large batches for those quickly approaching end of the school year parties or even birthday parties too.

For you cupcake enthusiasts out there,  a more accurately depicted owl cupcake recipe (as well as dozens of other amazing cupcake recipes) can be found in the colorful and fun recipe book Hello, Cupcake. All of the recipes in there are incredibly brilliant and cute!

Can I make these in advance?

Owl Cupcakes with Oreos Recipe

Ingredients

  • Your favorite cupcake mix
  • Whipped frosting
  • Candy coated chocolate (like M&M’s) or Reese’s Pieces
  • 2 OREO cookies per cupcake
  • Food coloring (Optional)

Instructions

1. Make cupcake mix according to directions.

2. Allow the cupcakes to cool completely. While you’re waiting it’s a good time to prepare your frosting. If you want to make a variety of colors, purchase white frosting and use food coloring to make a few small batches.

3. You will want the frosting a bit thicker in order to anchor the OREOs. TIP: You can add powdered sugar to help thicken your frosting.

4. Twist the OREOs apart, keeping only the frosted sides. You can microwave the cookies for a few seconds before hand which will help keep the cream in tact.

Place brown candies for the eyes. They look cutest when they are a bit cross eyed. If you put them in the centers, it’ll look like they are staring crazily at you.

Do this twice (so you’ll use two cookies) and eat the leftover chocolate cookies without telling anyone.

5. Arrange your completed eyes onto the tops of the cupcakes. Push an orange candy in sideways between the eyes for the beak.

Chill until you’re ready to serve!

Recipe Type: Dessert Prep time: 5 mins Total time: 5 mins Serves: 12

Tip: End of the school year have you frazzled? Swing by your local bakery and pick up a dozen cupcakes, then assemble and save yourself an hour of prep time and clean up.

Easy right? I assembled these using the new OREO 2-Packs. They’re perfect for projects like these because you can open only as many as you need, leaving the rest fresh. They are also a convenient grab-and-go snack. I slip them in my purse for busy days running errands or the times when I give in to this incurable sweet tooth I’ve developed with pregnancy. Meanwhile, Maddilyn loves to dunk them in a glass of milk as a mid-afternoon snack. The multipacks are sold in packages of 18 and can be found at local grocery stores, plus, they’re available in Nutter Butter flavor too!

  1. What a fun idea and one that my kids can assist and participate in. Plus, anything involving Oreos is always a win!
