DIY Outdoor Patio Furniture Makeover: From Ugly to Beach Chic in a Day!I was so excited when I found this great deal on outdoor patio furniture at Target last fall (its called the Target Home Conservatory 4-Piece Patio Furniture Set: Blue). It was the end of the season and I was able to grab the entire set at a whopping 75% off.

Unfortunately, once I got it home and put together out on the deck, I just couldn’t shake the feeling that it just didn’t “go”. I hated that everything else was white and beachy, while this set was black and sort of dreary…

So I had a choice – I could try and sell my patio set and buy a new one OR I could just perform a makeover instead. Being on a budget, I went for the latter – and I am so happy I did! Because with just some spray paint, fun outdoor fabric, sewing machine and a sunny Saturday afternoon, I ended up with this instead :)

*NOTE* I have zero sewing skills. This was actually my very first sewing project – so if I can do it, you can too!

Best part is I can remove and wash these when they get dirty and I can easily make them in different colors in case I feel like changing things up again!

For those of you that want to try, here is a list of what I used and a step by step guide in pictures. Feel free to leave me a question (if you have any) and I’ll answer as best as I can!

Cover your work area in a tarp and spray paint away. Start with the primer then apply satin or glass coat.

While the frames dry, make the cushion covers. Measure out how much material you need. Overlap by about 5-6 inches so that you won't need to add a button or zipper.

Hem the short ends, meaning just the ends that overlap.

Re-wrap your cushion with the outside of the pattern facing in, and make sure its fairly tight. Pinch the open, unhemmed sides and pin.

Remove cushion and trim edge to half inch of pins. The pins for me mark where my sewing line will go.

I used a magnet guide to keep me straight and at half inch from the edge. I also loved the pattern because I chose a line and followed it down.

Once you have sewn both sides, flip the cover right side out.

Insert cushion and fold over flap. Cover should be form fitting.

I did the throw pillows the exact same way.

  1. Great job!  Spray paint is such an easy way to transform things and I love the bright, fun fabric you chose.

    •  @Sarah BB East9thStreet Thanks Sarah! I agree. It was also the first time I had spray painted anything and it worked so well – especially with the intricate design on the backs and on the table.

    •  @EllenLafleche-Christian Thanks Ellen. Now I always look at things and think to myself, “You know, with a little bit of spray paint I could…” :)
