“Up North” pet parents look forward to cooler weather for two reasons: it kills the mosquitoes and it kills the fleas and ticks we spend all summer battling. When I moved south to Florida, I happily traded negative temperatures for winter’s spent in the 60s and 70s. However that trade off meant moving to the land of bugs.

Fleas and ticks become more widespread when humidity levels are between 50 and 90 percent and when the temperature is 70°F or greater. Basically, Florida is like a flea’s version of Nirvana.

In fact, fleas survive down here about twice as long as they do in Michigan – from March thru October. My poor fur baby became infested before I even knew it and I dreaded the thought of our new apartment crawling with fleas. I swear these bugs are mutants. They’re incredibly difficult to kill and a simple flea bath isn’t going to do the trick.

[infobox]Did you know a single flea can live up to 100 days and ten adult female fleas can produce up to 15,000 flea eggs in just 30 days?[/infobox]

The thought of that many fleas in my home sends a shiver down my spine. Not only do they creep me out, but they’re incredibly uncomfortable for Zoey. These buggy vampires live off our pet’s blood and can even transmit diseases.

The smartest way to protect pets from pests is treating our pets, home and yard before a flea and tick outbreak occurs. Products like Adams™ Flea & Tick Control offer a whole line of preventative Flea and Tick products to safeguard my home, my fur baby and my family.

For The Home

Use a spray like Adams™ Flea & Tick Home Spray. Not only does it protect against fleas and ticks, it also protects against cockroaches, ants, spiders, mosquitoes and even bed bugs. Considering Florida feels like the land of bugs that is awesome. Plus, one good spray starts killing in 5 minutes and offers up to 7 months protection or control. This is perfect for lazy people like me! No wonder consumers gave it the 2014 Product of the Year award.

For Your Pet

Adams™ has a few options for your pet. I prefer a combination of all three as the Adams for Dogs Flea & Tick Spot On® provides flea and tick protection for up to 30 days. Both Adams™ for Dogs Flea & Tick Spot On® and Adams™ Flea & Tick Spray kill the adult fleas as well as eggs and larvae and they even kill and repels mosquitoes.  Adams™ Flea & Tick Cleansing Shampoo works for cats, dogs and kittens and puppies over 12 weeks of age. It’s designed to kill fleas, ticks, and lice, and prevents flea eggs from hatching for 30 days.

For Your Yard

Adams Yard Spray kills fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, and ants and also kills bugs in your lawn, trees & shrubs, roses & flowers, and gardens. Plus it lasts up to four weeks so you only need to do it once a month!

In addition to preventative products from Adams™ Flea & Tick Control Products there are other things you can do to safeguard your pet:

  • Mow Your Lawn Regularly
Ticks usually like to hang out in damp areas and in tall grass and weeds. It is important to keep your lawn mowed and to walk your dog on a path and try to keep them out of the tall grass.
  • Clean Your Yard
Stacked woodpiles of leaves, and mounds of rocks are the ideal breeding ground for fleas. The more clutter, the more places fleas can take refuge.
  • Use Natural Methods
Fleas and Ticks are repulsed by the smell of Cedar Chips. Sprinkle them in shady areas, under your porch and outdoor furniture. You can even move over them and the powder still works to repel fleas.
  • Groom Your Pet Regularly
Grooming your pet on a regular basis helps keep them clean and allows you to look for any signs of fleas or ticks. Plus, it’s a great bonding time for you and your pet.

  1. It is so important to protect your pets from fleas and ticks. This year they are predicting a terrible tick season.

  2. Gosh, saying someone had fleas was such a big insult growing up. Much worse than cooties. I need to keep all these tips in mind so we don’t end up with bites.

  3. It’s no fun to have fleas in your home or yard. I remember getting eaten alive during the summers, playing in fields. I need to make sure my supplies are stocked for the rest of the summer.
